Closing Time Decides It: What Boulder’s Study Cafes Tell You

We set out to write the obvious version of this article — the one that tells you which Boulder cafes have outlets under every table. Outlet and wifi details are rarely listed online, though, so this is a different version: you can check a closing time before you go, and in Boulder the closing time is what really decides your evening. Of the six operators here, four shut at five or six, one shuts at three, and one runs into the evening. Hours below were read on Aug. 20, 2026.

The Coffee Stand — 1201 Arapahoe Ave

The Coffee Stand sits at Arapahoe and Broadway, between downtown and campus, and it publishes details about working there. Its own copy says “outlets are available throughout the work area,” and suggests arriving with a charged laptop, because “the most popular outlet spots can fill during peak hours.” The wifi password is given at the counter with an order, and the site states there are no time limits. It describes itself as “a genuinely laptop friendly coffee shop in Boulder, not just a place that doesn’t kick you out.”

The layout is two rooms: a front cafe with softer seating and conversation, and a larger space behind it called The Stand, reached through open garage doors, with high ceilings and tables the business describes as sized for actual work. There is a standing offer of a free third espresso shot on coffee drinks from 4–9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, applied automatically. The contact page lists Monday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. and Tuesday through Sunday 8 a.m.–9 p.m., and the cafe has also advertised 7:30 a.m. openings and a 10 p.m. close Thursday to Saturday, so call if you are counting on the last hour.

Trident Booksellers & Cafe — 940 Pearl St

Trident publishes 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and 7 a.m.–11 p.m. on Friday — no weekend cut, no Sunday exception. For a working session that starts after a late seminar, that consistency is useful. It is an employee-owned independent bookstore and cafe, established in 1980, with a serious tea program alongside the coffee and a used-and-new book floor attached.

Ask at the counter about laptops and wifi. One variable worth knowing in advance is that Trident hosts music and book events on its back patio through the year, which changes the room. Check the events listing if you need quiet on a specific evening.

Alpine Modern — 904 College Ave and 1695 29th St

Alpine Modern covers two very different parts of town from one operator. The College Avenue cafe is the University Hill option, walkable from south campus. The 29th Street cafe sits inside the Twenty Ninth Street retail district in East Boulder. Both cafes and their kitchens are open daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Neither is an evening option, and that is the honest framing: this is a morning-and-early-afternoon operator with a Hill address and an East Boulder address.

One useful detail the business publishes, specific to the Hill location, is a request to be considerate of residential neighbours when parking. College Avenue is a residential street with a cafe on it. Bike or bus if you can, and if you drive, that request is the business’s own, not ours.

OZO Coffee Roasters — four Boulder cafes, and the 6 a.m. option

OZO is the early one. The Arapahoe cafe at 5340 Arapahoe Ave and the West Pearl cafe at 1015 Pearl St both open at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday — useful if your productive hours are before anyone else is awake, less useful if they are after dinner, since all four Boulder locations are closed by 6 p.m. East Pearl at 1521 Pearl St runs 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The one to watch is the Roastery Cafe at 1898 S Flatiron Ct, out in Flatiron Park: it is open weekdays 7 a.m.–2 p.m. and not at all on weekends. It appears on Boulder cafe lists regularly without those hours attached, and a Saturday trip out there is a wasted ride. There is a fifth cafe in Longmont, outside the scope of a walk-there-between-classes piece.

The Laughing Goat — and the late-night reputation that is no longer true

If one entry here overturns something you thought you knew, it is this one. The Laughing Goat has a long-standing reputation as Boulder’s late study spot, and nothing in the system is open past 6 p.m. Pearl, at 1709 Pearl Street, runs 6:30 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.–6 p.m. weekends. Baby Goat at 2907 55th Street runs 6:30 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday. If a listicle sends you there at nine, that listicle is out of date.

The location worth planning around is the Norlin cafe, physically inside CU’s main library at 1720 Pleasant Street, open 7:45 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and to 5 p.m. Friday. That is a clean coffee-and-library pairing, because the building keeps going long after the counter stops. Check Norlin’s Sunday hours before a Sunday trip.

Amante Coffee, Uptown — 4580 Broadway

Amante is the North Boulder entry, in the Uptown Broadway development, and its published hours are 7 a.m.–3 p.m. daily. That means the cafe option north of downtown shuts by mid-afternoon. Their downtown cafe at 1023 Walnut St runs 8 a.m.–3 p.m. daily. Call ahead to confirm hours before you go.

What the business does say about the space is worth repeating because it is a real environmental variable: their own page describes it as a good place to watch a soccer match or the Tour de France, and sits it next to restaurants and a bike shop. A cafe with a television showing sport is a specific noise profile, and they are the ones saying so. Note also that their Baseline Road location is permanently closed — their own site says the decision came in the aftermath of the pandemic — and older Boulder guides still list it.

The buildings that are actually designed for this

If the real requirement is power and a chair for six hours, a library beats a cafe on every axis except the coffee. Norlin Library runs 7:30 a.m.–11 p.m. Monday through Thursday this fall, with Norlin Commons on 24-hour Buff OneCard access Monday through Thursday from Aug. 23. Norlin’s own page lists five floors, reservable group study rooms, dedicated grad-student space, lockers, technology checkout, a Mindfulness Room and nap pods on the first floor. The catch is access: the libraries site notes a Buff OneCard may be required for building entry, so this is a CU option rather than a public one.

For everyone else, Boulder Public Library’s Main branch at 1001 Arapahoe Ave runs Monday to Thursday 9–7, Friday 9–5, Saturday 10–5 and Sunday 12–5, with reservable study rooms and free weekend parking. Note the geometry: Main is at 1001 Arapahoe and The Coffee Stand is at 1201 Arapahoe, two blocks apart on the same street. When the library closes at seven, the cafe two blocks east is still open. In North Boulder, the NoBo branch at 4500 13th Street keeps the same hours and has a free lot, which covers the gap after Amante closes at three.

Two places older guides will still send you

Innisfree Poetry Bookstore & Cafe on Pennsylvania Avenue, a fixture of University Hill study lists for years, is closed. It still appears in Hill cafe roundups. Salto Coffee Works turns up constantly on Boulder coffee searches, and its Nederland cafe has closed. Salto’s own locations page now calls 112 E 2nd Street “the former home of original Salto Cafe” — the address trades as Ned General today — and gives Salto’s remaining cafe as 51a Main Street in Rollinsville. Nederland is seventeen miles up Boulder Canyon and Rollinsville is further still, so neither was ever a gap-between-classes option, and any guide still sending you to a Salto cafe in Nederland is out of date.

And to be explicit about what this article does not tell you: outlet counts, or laptop policies beyond what The Coffee Stand says about itself. For those, the way to know is to walk in and ask. What you can do from your desk is check the closing time, and now you have.
